Announcing the Sharp Shorts Awardees

We are delighted to announce the nine films that will be produced through Sharp Shorts.

Sharp Shorts launched in May, inviting writers, writer/directors or filmmaking teams to submit a one-page outline of their film idea – attracting over 400 applications.

The Short Circuit team carried out a structured assessment process. In the first stage, the strongest story outlines were identified by a team of readers, who looked at outlines alone without access to any identifying applicant information. The highest scoring project ideas then progressed to the next stage of assessment, with each application read by at least two assessors in full. A final shortlist of thirty-three projects was then discussed by the Short Circuit assessment panel, made up of the project partners, who selected the sixteen ideas to take part in further development to take their project from idea to script.

Over the last few weeks the Short Circuit Talent Executives, Alice and Mar, have been working with these sixteen teams to help them to complete their scripts, which were then pitched to the Short Circuit panel.

The following nine films are today announced as the selected projects:

A90 – Writer/Director: Olivia Middleton; Producer: Carys Evans

We are hugely excited to be working with these talented teams to support them in making their short films. Each team will receive up to £15,000 to produce their film, and will also take part in intensive production training, and will be paired with an established Producer, Director or Writer  who will mentor the team to help them to deliver their final film.

We know there is a wealth of filmmaking talent in Scotland and are keen to continue to support new and emerging talent across the country. Our First Features development programme will be launched in the coming weeks for those who are working on their debut feature project.

We will also soon be announcing a programme of events and opportunities to help showcase and develop your filmmaking careers.

As always, please do get in touch with any comments or suggestions, and please keep an eye on our website for further announcements.

Promonews Review | Lunir - Learning

“Olivia J. Middleton directs a dark, melancholic portrait of depression within a modern relationship, in her video for Lunir's Learning.

Inside an apartment, Lunir - Becky Sikasa and David Scobie - are in separate rooms, frozen in a state of anxiety, as the sun creeps through slits in the curtains. The despondent vibe carries through to the performances, which are emotionally affecting and defeated, embodying the themes of the track and concept.

Middleton cleverly elevates the visual through subtle art direction and choices in the composition and edit, anchoring the video in reality whilst adding an abstract creative flair. “

Film Ireland - Rosalyn Review

“Winner of Best Cork Film, Olivia J. Middleton’s Rosalyn is a psychological horror about a farmer who is expecting a child. As the delivery date looms, Rosalyn starts to see a disturbing figure coming out of the woods; animals become scared of her. Is Rosalyn imagining all this or are malevolent forces at play? Tackling themes of isolation, mental health during pregnancy and the expectations of motherhood, the film manages to teeter between delusion and reality. With influences of Jennifer Kent’s Babadook, Middleton’s haunting film leaves a lot to the imagination and inspired great discussion after the credits. “

“A very raw, organic and unsettling film that manages to plunge the audience deep within the mind of the main actress. Impressive art direction, sound design and cinematography resulting in a strong and original horror.”
